What is a Tummy Tuck, and what are the benefits?
Also known as an abdominoplasty, it is a procedure that improves the appearance of your stomach and surrounding areas. It is a very popular and safe procedure that is done throughout the United States. A tummy tuck can eliminate excess skin and stubborn fat deposits when exercise and diet don’t quite get the job done. This procedure is available for both men and women and has many benefits. A tummy tuck has often given patients a flatter stomach with tighter abdominal muscles. Many will have a slender waistline as well. Patients, if their goals are met, often report better self-confidence in their appearance.
Is there a difference between a tummy tuck and liposuction?
While a tummy tuck and liposuction share some characteristics, these are two different procedures. Liposuction does a great job at removing stubborn fat from an area and is often used during a tummy tuck procedure. However, liposuction will not remove loose skin or tighten the muscles of the abdomen. A tummy tuck will do a better job at achieving a toned and more attractive midsection.
Are there different types of tummy tucks? What are the differences?
Yes, depending on your goals, you can either get a Full Tummy Tuck or a Partial Tummy Tuck, also known as a Mini Tummy Tuck.
A full tummy tuck will give your abdominal area more definition and tighten the muscles in that area. The incision is made below the stomach from hip bone to hip bone, below the belly button. Extra skin and fat are removed from the entire midsection during a full tummy tuck.
A mini tummy tuck focuses on the area below the navel or belly button. The incision is smaller and results in a shorter recovery time. Generally, this procedure only addresses excess skin and fat on the lower abdomen. There may be some abdominal muscles that are addressed, but not as many as the full tummy tuck.
How do I know if a tummy tuck is right for me? How long does the result last?
If you have good health and have stretched skin that will not shrink back, you are the right candidate for this procedure. It can also help address fat deposits in the abdominal area. You should be at a stable weight before going forward with it, and women should not plan on having future pregnancies after the procedure. Results should be permanent if you maintain a healthy weight and avoid a pregnancy.
Should I expect any pain or downtime after a tummy tuck?
During the first couple of days, you should expect some moderate pain. We can help relieve these symptoms with some medication to help with any discomfort. You should expect to take a week off of work to recover from the surgery and up to four weeks for a total recovery from this procedure.
Will this remove my stretch marks?
Yes, a tummy tuck will remove most but not all of your stretch marks on your lower abdomen. After your excess skin is removed, our providers will reposition the remaining skin to achieve your goals of a toned stomach. When we suture the remaining skin, stretch marks not eliminated will appear flatter and smoother, reducing their appearance almost altogether.
Can I lose weight with a tummy tuck?
A tummy tuck is not meant as a weight loss procedure. The goal of a tummy tuck is to remove extra skin and fat and tighten the abdominal muscles. The skin that is removed is not a significant amount of weight.
